Last Saturday, a magical night under the stars, was almost a faithful reproduction of the movie La La Land. Both the Homecoming game and carnival created a sense of unity and school pride. Homecoming season was upon us and it didn’t disappoint!
The Sophomore Class President chose the vibrant theme of La la Land; City of Stars, and Homecoming brought this movie to life indeed. Twinkling lights and the glow of the carnival rides set a night to remember, with every moment feeling like it was straight out of the iconic film. From the game to the dance, there were countless highlights.
The students of Golden Valley gathered together to experience the homecoming game on September 6th. The Den was filled with spirited Grizzlies chanting and supporting our varsity football team. However, many would say that the Homecoming parade was the highlight of that night. The parade consisted of Golden Valley clubs showing off their well-decorated banners, the cheerleaders, the marching band, and the Homecoming court nominees:
- Seniors: Jonathan Okereke & Jocelyn Antonio, Nevaeh Scott & Angel Gonzalez
- Juniors: Kayla Huerta & Sevyn Turner
- Sophomores: Melanie Nieves & Elyjah Walsh
- Freshman: Jasleine Gonzalez & Sebastian Gonzalez
The nominees rode in nice flashy cars and the crowd went wild when they appeared to show their support. Cheer, Dance, and Band performed at halftime, with Cheer showcasing their spectacular stunts and new moves. Dance did something a little different this year than their regular hip-hop routine, leaning more into musical theater choreography. Additionally, the band performed their show, When You Wish, during halftime. The night ended with a seven to six point win for GV!
Upon entering the GV campus, there were a variety of activities to choose from: a ferris wheel, bears rides, the dance floor, a VIP room, matching ducks, spike ball, and even a photobooth. More than half of the students who attended homecoming said that their favorite activity was riding the ferris wheel, which did not come as a surprise since the view up above was indeed breathtaking. When students got hungry they had the choice to eat popcorn or have a meal that included a homemade cheeseburger with a choice of chips and an Agua Fresca.
The night of September 7th was one night to remember. Students of Golden Valley were able to experience their night by getting groovy on the dance floor and see the wonderful view from the ferris wheel! The GV’s Homecoming Court 2024 was also worth celebrating, with the senior winners Jonathan Okereke and Jocelyn Antonio, making their HOCO one to remember and cherish.
The Gazette interviewed GV students Jocelyn Antonio and Sherwood Sebastian to give their opinion and their experience at homecoming. Jocelyn Antonio remarked that she loved, “Dancing and bussing it down with Jonathan”, while GV Junior Sherwood Sebastian commented, “My favorite part of HOCO was definitely the ferris wheel because I rode on it for a while and it was the best ride there”. Both students had an amazing time at homecoming, enjoying the dance floor and the ferris wheel and many more.
Homecoming 2024 was definitely a night to remember.
