Within Santa Clarita, a small group of volunteers that’s dedicated to helping the environment is working together on a genuine project that plans to improve locations such as Golden Valley Open Space, Elsmere Canyon Open Space, or Taylor Trailhead. This project is known as the “Wildland Weed Warriors”, under the supervision of Dave Christianson and Mary Herr, and is making a profound impact on the environment around Santa Clarita Valley.

Volunteers play an active role in restoring the ecosystem by planting native plants, watering them, and removing invasive weeds from these locations. The main goal of the project is to improve habitats and provide more food and shelter for pollinators, birds, deers, and other animals of the chaparral ecosystem.

If interested in volunteering, volunteers must be the ages of 11 and up, needing to pre-register online in order to participate in the project. Those that are between the ages of 11 and 16 must also be supervised by a parent or guardian. Additionally, volunteers should come prepared with work gloves, closed-toed shoes, and layers of clothing that will get dirty. Following this, it’s encouraged to bring long-handled shovels, hats, sunscreen, and both water and snacks.

Events are set on weekends, holding sessions from May through June, taking place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Specific dates can be found on the Santa Clarita Volunteer website.
